HOSPICES DE BEAUNE - Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée "Guigone de Salins" Rouge 2021

Beaune Premier Cru - Cuvée Guigone de Salins 1er crus - 2021

  • PhilosophyWorld famous, the Hospices de Beaune are one of the great Burgundian institutions. Founded in 1443 to come to the aid of the most needy, the historic hospital is located in the heart of the old town in one of the most beautiful collections of European medieval architecture. Over the centuries, the institution has received donations and bequests from local families, mainly in the form of vineyards which today constitute, with almost 60 hectares, one of the most beautiful wine estates in the region. Vinified on site under the leadership of charismatic oenologist Ludivine Griveau, these great prestige wines are sold each year "en primeur" in November following the harvest, at a spectacular auction. Every year, and this since at least 1916, the Edouard Delaunay house buys some of the finest vintages which it matures and then bottles with the greatest care for its best customers.
  • TerroirThe Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée "Guigone de Salins" comes from several prestigious parcels that contribute to the richness and complexity of this wine:
  • Les Bressandes: Located on the upper slopes of Beaune, these parcels benefit from steep inclines and soils composed of a mix of clay and limestone. This combination imparts a harmonious balance of power and finesse to the wine.
  • Champs Pimont: Characterized by iron-rich and stony soils, these parcels provide a solid structure to the wine, ensuring excellent aging potential.
  • Les Seurey: Situated near Champs Pimont, these vines enhance the wine's mid-palate, adding roundness and aromatic complexity.
  • This diversity of terroirs, with varied exposures and distinct soil compositions, contributes to the creation of a well-balanced wine that combines elegance, depth, and excellent aging potential.
  • Vinfication and ageingThis wine was vinified by the charismatic oenologist of the Hospices de Beaune, Ludivine Griveau. Very early manual harvest this year (early September) then rigorous sorting of the grapes on a sorting table. Destemmed grapes and maceration for 17 to 19 days with punching down and pumping over. Aging for 18 months in new barrels then entrusted to the house of Edouard Delaunay.
  • Tasting notesThe Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée "Guigone de Salins" Rouge 2021 reveals a brilliant ruby color with purplish highlights, hinting at its concentration. The nose opens with an explosion of ripe red fruits like cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant, evolving into subtle spicy and woody notes of vanilla, white pepper, and licorice. As the wine breathes, earthy aromas of undergrowth and truffle emerge, characteristic of fine Beaune Premier Crus. On the palate, the attack is ample and silky, leading to a mid-palate with fine yet present tannins and a vibrant acidity that balances the richness of red fruit flavors, accented by plum and cocoa undertones. The finish is long and persistent, marked by delicate toasted notes and a refined minerality derived from the limestone soils. This 2021 vintage is precise and elegant, showcasing the potential of the Beaune terroir and meticulous winemaking. Enjoyable now, it promises even greater complexity with a few years of aging.
