- PhilosophyOne of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.
- TerroirThe wine of kings. Rare and reputed as the finest terroir in Nuits-SaintGeorges, “Les Saint-Georges” is one of Burgundy’s legendary climats and it is currently being considered for Grand Cru status. Located south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the bottom of the slope, the plot’s clayey brown soil strewn with pebbles lends depth and maturity to the wines along with ever-present minerality.
- Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked at their peak of ripeness and brought quickly to the winery in small crates where they were meticulously sorted before being destemmed. Once they were transferred to tanks, they began to fer- ment naturally under the influence of indigenous yeasts after a few days. Maceration lasted 3 weeks with few punch-downs and some pumpovers. After the grapes were pressed, the young wine was transferred to new oak barrels (from Central France’s finest forests) and aged for 17 months .
- Tasting notesBeautiful, intense, dark red color. The nose is immediately expressive, complex and deliciously fruity (vine peach, yellow peach). It then evolves towards spicy notes of curry and cumin, before giving way to woody nuances (hops, heather earth, toasted hazelnut). The nose retains a great freshness, accentuated by a touch of menthol and chlorophyll, as well as by citrus scents (orange zest, bergamot). The attack on the palate is broad and ample, characterized by a density and concentration that persist throughout the tasting. On the palate, we find warm aromas of cocoa powder, tobacco, peat, incense. Subtle touches of smoke and leather. The finish, very fresh, is marked by notes of menthol and pepper. A great wine, of remarkable complexity.
