Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Red 2022

Charmes Chambertin Grand Crus - 2022

  • AppellationCharmes-Chambertin
  • Production:556 bottles and 18 magnums.
  • Philosophy The largest and the best known of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Crus. Charmes-Chambertin allies all of the qualities that can be expected of this village’s Grand Crus: ripe, fleshy fruit, power and roundness, depth, balance. It boasts incomparable “charm” and can reach great heights.
  • Terroir Set at altitudes of between 240 and 280 metres, the "Charmes" climat is the link between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. Our cuvée hails from two plots, in “Charmes” and “Mazoyères”, where the vines are 80 years old and between 15 and 50 years old respectively. The two plots are located in the southern part of the appellation, downhill from “Les Chambertin” and south of “Les Griotte-Chambertin”. The vines in “Charmes” grow in just a few dozen centimetres of brown soil composed of silt and gravelly scree in the upper part, that lend added maturity and body to the wine. The vines in the second plot grow in calcareous soil that contains varying proportions of clay, lending finesse and minerality to the wine.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes for this Grand Cru were handpicked, sorted a first time in the vineyard then a second time when they arrived at the winery. After a short week of cold pre-fermentation maceration, the naturally present indigenous yeasts initiated the fermentation process. Maceration lasted 18 days. The wine was then barrel aged for 17 months, in new barrels with fine grains from the forests of Central France, with a light toasting quality.
  • Tasting notesLovely ruby red color, intense. An expressive and powerful nose dominated by fruity scents of plum tart, cherry clafoutis or blood orange peel. Pleasant freshness (fresh coriander, chlorophyll) enhanced by a warmer note of beeswax. Elegant woody aromas are perceived, all in finesse (blond tobacco, cedar) which bring depth and complexity. The attack on the palate presents a great density crowned by a beautiful balance. The tannins are supple and silky, giving the wine a beautiful length on the palate. The tasting continues with a fresh finish (Sichuan pepper) although warm (cocoa powder, Tonka bean). This great wine for ageing, with an infinite aromatic palette, will reveal all its character as it ages.
