Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Red 2021

Charmes Chambertin Grand Crus - 2021

  • Production:556 bottles and 18 magnums.
  • Philosophy The largest and the best known of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Crus. Charmes-Chambertin allies all of the qualities that can be expected of this village’s Grand Crus: ripe, fleshy fruit, power and roundness, depth, balance. It boasts incomparable “charm” and can reach great heights.
  • Terroir Set at altitudes of between 240 and 280 metres, the "Charmes" climat is the link between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. Our cuvée hails from two plots, in “Charmes” and “Mazoyères”, where the vines are 80 years old and between 15 and 50 years old respectively. The two plots are located in the southern part of the appellation, downhill from “Les Chambertin” and south of “Les Griotte-Chambertin”. The vines in “Charmes” grow in just a few dozen centimetres of brown soil composed of silt and gravelly scree in the upper part, that lend added maturity and body to the wine. The vines in the second plot grow in calcareous soil that contains varying proportions of clay, lending finesse and minerality to the wine.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes for this Grand Cru were handpicked, sorted a first time in the vineyard then a second time when they arrived at the winery. The finest bunches of grapes (30%) were not destemmed. After a short week of cold pre-fermentation maceration, the naturally present indigenous yeasts initiated the fermentation process. Maceration lasted 18 days. The wine was then barrel aged for 18 months using a proportion of 80% new oak (medium toast) sourced from the Allier and Chatillon forests.
  • Tasting notesSuperb deep vermillion red colour. The first nose is elegant, fruity (orange peel) and delicately f loral (carnation, rose). Warm scents of leather and incense then emerge. Balsamic notes gradually give way to delectable aromas of brioche and still-warm freshly baked bread. Nuances of truffle recall the clayey nature of this wine’s terroir. A full-bodied, generous start to the palate offers pleasing flavours of sugared almonds and slightly bitter hot chocolate. The tannins are mature, assertive and remarkably round. Excellent length on the palate is punctuated by refreshing bitterness. Exceptional balance. This is a superbly pleasurable wine that will reveal its full potential as it ages
