Volnay Village - 2019

  • Production3806 bottles
  • PhilosophyVolnay’s red wines, renowned for their unique alliance of depth and finesse, subtlety and a silky, velvety palate, are among Burgundy’s finest. They have always been among the favourites of the Delaunay family. Suc- ceeding in crafting and presenting a beautiful Volnay, imbued with all of the qualities of its appellation, was a task that the House of Edouard Delaunay could not pass up the opportunity to undertake.
  • TerroirVolnay’s fame dates far back in time. In 1666, Claude Bouchu, Louis XIV’s intendant, recommended what he considered "the best wine in Burgundy" to the king. Perched high up in the Côte de Beaune (between 230 and 280 metres in altitude), Volnay is adjacent to hill of Chaignot. The appella- tion is surrounded by the villages of Meursault, Pommard and Monthélie. The 60 -year-old vines are located at the foot of the slopes. They grow in deep, rich soil that is composed of limestone, clay, silt and red marls, lending minerality and finesse to the wine.
  • Vinification and ageingAlways reaching optimal ripeness, this appellation is the first to be har- vested at Edouard Delaunay! The grapes were handpicked and completely destemmed before undergoing vinification without the use of sulphites. The cap was punched down only twice, but the must was pumped over regularly to preserve the terroir’s finesse. Cuvaison lasted 18 days inclu- ding 4 days of pre-fermentation maceration. After 18 days, the wine was transferred to barrels (20% new oak) and allowed to age for 15 months.
  • Tasting notesBeautiful limpid red colour. Warm, charming nose evocative of stewed fruits underpinned by a hint of forest undergrowth along with intensifying notes of resinous wood (cedar) and brambles. Starts of magnificently on the palate, soft and engaging, subtle and elegant, with nuances of black and red fruits (cherry, blueberry jam, fresh blackberry), light tobacco, caramel and vanilla. A delicate, elegant, very soft wine that finishes on f loral notes of peony and cherrywood.
