- PhilosophyOne of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.
- TerroirThis Premier Cru vineyard is located north of the village of Nuits-Saint- Georges, at the entrance to the Meuzin valley, which leads to the Hautes Côtes. Its name refers to the clay aspect of the soil, which is rather shal- low here. Despite its almost full southern exposure, which allows the vines to benefit from a great deal of sunshine, the grapes ripen quite late due to the cold air that comes from the valley. The vines do a fine job of synthesizing these contradictory elements, resulting in a wine that is rich yet fresh.
- Vinification and ageingThe old vines produce very low yields and the grapes were harvested at their peak of maturity and collected in small crates. They were sorted a first time in the vineyard, then a second time at the winery. 10% of the grapes were left whole when they were transferred to tanks. Only three gentle punch-downs were required to give this exceptional wine its structure. Ageing was particularly long for this concentrated cuvée, lasting for 20 months and using 60% new oak barrels sourced from Burgundy’s forests (Cîteaux, Nevers, Chatillon).
- Tasting notesGorgeous, deep colour, almost black. The nose is intense and complex. Aromas of menthol, eucalyptus, forest develop with a nuance of tar. Then come roasted notes of coffee, cocoa beans and chestnuts, along with fruit scents (cherry brandy). The powerful yet fine, delicate nose offers a wide-ranging palette of aromas. They are echoed on the palate, which gets off to a very pleasing start. This is a rich, powerful wine with nice acidity that gives length and dense texture and boasts superb cellaring potential. It is both powerful and fresh, with intense tannins, and will reveal all of its character after spending some time in the cellar.
