- PhilosophyOne of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.
- TerroirThe wine of kings. Rare and reputed as the finest terroir in Nuits-SaintGeorges, “Les Saint-Georges” is one of Burgundy’s legendary climats and it is currently being considered for Grand Cru status. Located south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the bottom of the slope, the plot’s clayey brown soil strewn with pebbles lends depth and maturity to the wines along with ever-present minerality.
- Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked at their peak of ripeness and brought quickly to the winery in small crates where they were meticulously sorted before being destemmed. Once they were transferred to tanks, they began to fer- ment naturally under the influence of indigenous yeasts after a few days. Maceration lasted 2 weeks with few punch-downs and some pumpovers. After the grapes were pressed, the young wine was transferred to new oak barrels (from Central France’s finest forests) and aged for 8 months before being racked to finish ageing for another 12 months in barrels, with a proportion of 50% new oak.
- Tasting notesMagnificent dark red in colour with slightly bluish nuances. The first nose is very intense and complex, featuring aromas of forest undergrowth and scrubland (mushrooms, morels, fresh moss, heather, thyme, oregano, pine) and scents of black fruit (black cherry, blueberry, blackberry). Hints of smoke and caramel then emerge (Amsterdamer tobacco, incense), fol- lowed by notes of baked goods (vanilla, yeast, mocha cake). Full-bodied, large and ample start to the palate. The f lavours match those detected on the nose. Beautiful volume and impressive length. This intense, expressive wine is ideal for laying down.
