Echezeaux Grand Cru Red 2019

Echezeaux Grand Crus - 2019

  • Production584 bottles and 6 magnums
  • PhilosophyThe Echezeaux Grand Cru vineyards are subdivided into eleven climats, eleven lieux- dits with rather distinctive characteristics. Our cuvée hails from two adjacent plots that are both located on the upper part of the slope in the middle of the appellation: “Les Rouges du Bas”, composed of poor, shallow soil that overlies the hard limestone parent rock, and “Les Champs Traversins”, with marly, sandy soil. Two lieux-dits that yield fine, elegant, mineral Echézeaux wines.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked at their peak of ripeness. They were sorted at the winery and a portion (20%) of whole bunches were reserved for vinification which used no sulfites and relied on daily punch- downs. The wine was aged for 14 months in extra finely-grained new oak barrels (trees that grew very slowly) sourced from the forests of central France, and slowly yet lightly toasted to allow all of this Echézeaux’s finesse to shine through.
  • Tasting notesLovely cherry red in colour. Our Echézeaux is endowed with a rather re- served personality that requires time and a certain manner of approach before revealing itself. The first nose is discrete and subtle, reminiscent of slightly smoky notes of bark and willow, followed by scents of wild berries (elderberry, black cherry, cranberry, Cornelian cherry…) The first impression on the palate is one of silkiness and softness yet with cer- tain density (notes of stone, lichen, a touch of charcoal) underpinned by pleasing acidity that contributes to this wine’s freshness. Nuances of blood orange and vineyard peach come next followed by f lavours of baked goods: bread, roasted chestnuts and red berry tart, embellished with nuances of spices (cumin, pepper, clove) and beeswax, evolving towards those of incense and dried orange peel. This is a grand wine for true connoisseurs that boasts lovely tautness that will develop over time.
