Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Red 2020

Charmes Chambertin Grand Crus - 2020

  • Production:828 bottles and 24 magnums.
  • Philosophy The largest and the best known of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Crus. Charmes-Chambertin allies all of the qualities that can be expected of this village’s Grand Crus: ripe, fleshy fruit, power and roundness, depth, balance. It boasts incomparable “charm” and can reach great heights.
  • Terroir Set at altitudes of between 240 and 280 metres, the "Charmes" climat is the link between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. Our cuvée hails from two plots, in “Charmes” and “Mazoyères”, where the vines are 80 years old and between 15 and 50 years old respectively. The two plots are located in the southern part of the appellation, downhill from “Les Chambertin” and south of “Les Griotte-Chambertin”. The vines in “Charmes” grow in just a few dozen centimetres of brown soil composed of silt and gravelly scree in the upper part, that lend added maturity and body to the wine. The vines in the second plot grow in calcareous soil that contains varying proportions of clay, lending finesse and minerality to the wine.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes for this Grand Cru were handpicked, sorted a first time in the vineyard then a second time when they arrived at the winery. The finest bunches of grapes (10%) were not destemmed. After a short week of cold pre-fermentation maceration, the naturally present indigenous yeasts initiated the fermentation process. Maceration lasted 18 days. The wine was then barrel aged for 20 months using a proportion of 100% new oak (medium toast) sourced from the Allier and Chatillon forests.
  • Tasting notesGorgeous, dark, intense red colour. Complex nose redolent of vanilla and cherry, cigar and coffee, pastries and red fruit preserve (cherry, raspberry, cranberry…). Notes of fresh spices lend a mounting, airy, very elegant dimension. The palate is extremely dense and deep, yet fresh featuring bold, well-integrated acidity and tannins. The overall impression is one of silkiness, f luidity and elegance. It is exceptionally complex, finishing on notes of sweetened dark chocolate and liquorice. A magnificent wine that is elegant, distinguished and dense
