Gevrey-Chambertin Le Village Vieilles Vignes Red 2020

Gevrey Chambertin Village - 2020

  • PhilosophyThe great, world-renowned village of the northern Côte de Nuits. The Delaunay family, who was originally from Dijon but moved to the Côte de Nuits, has had a long-standing penchant for this village and has always stood out for the quality of its wines from this appellation. Gevrey-Chambertins are fleshy, delectable, intense wines that are often described as “masculine”, boasting notes of dark fruit and liquorice. We hope that you will discover these characteristics in this great classic.
  • TerroirThe vines of Gevrey-Chambertin are some of the oldest in Burgundy. Viticulture here dates back to the 1st century AD. As early as the 6th century, Gevrey was listed among the finest wines in Burgundy, which is owed in particular to the foundation of the Bèze Abbey in 640. The grapes for this cuvée were sourced from different climats spread throughout the village: “Aux Chezeaux”, “Les Reniards”, “Les Platières” and “Les Pincevin”. The vines grow at altitudes of between 250 and 300 m in marly soil covered by scree and iron-rich red silt from the plateau. The gravel lends the wine elegance and finesse while the fossil-rich, clayey marls give it body and firmness. Exposure to the sun - mainly southeast and east – is ideal.
  • Vinification and ageing The grapes were picked at their peak of ripeness. The grapes from each plot that compose this cuvée were vinified and aged separately with up to 25% of the harvest left as whole bunches. Following a short period of cold pre-fermentation maceration, vinification lasted approximately twenty days, with daily punch-downs. After 5 days of final warm maceration, the wines were barreled (40% new oak from the Vosges forests and the forests of Central France) and aged for 16 months before the final blen- ding and bottling. This year, a barrel of Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cherbaudes was added to the final cuvée.
  • Tasting notesBeautiful deep red in colour. The nose is redolent of r ipe cherry and spices (thyme, coriander). Next, slight hints of smoke, roasted peanut and chocolate surface. The start to the palate is dense and the tannins are bold. The f lavour profile features cherrystone, orange peel and clove. Pleasing acidity with a hint of iodine. This is a magnificent, very power- ful wine that will require decanting in its youth
