Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Red 2019

Charmes Chambertin Grand Crus - 2019

  • Philosophy TThe largest and the best known of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Crus. Charmes-Chambertin allies all of the qualities that can be expected of this village’s Grand Crus: ripe, fleshy fruit, power and roundness, depth, balance. It boasts incomparable “charm” and can reach great heights.
  • Terroir Set at altitudes of between 240 and 280 metres, the "Charmes" climat is the link between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. Our cuvée hails from two plots, in “Charmes” and “Mazoyères”, where the vines are 80 years old and between 15 and 50 years old respectively. The two plots are located in the southern part of the appellation, downhill from “Les Chambertin” and south of “Les Griotte-Chambertin”. The vines in “Charmes” grow in just a few dozen centimetres of brown soil composed of silt and gravelly scree in the upper part, that lend added maturity and body to the wine. The vines in the second plot grow in calcareous soil that contains varying proportions of clay, lending finesse and minerality to the wine.
  • Vinification and ageing The grapes were completely destemmed before undergoing traditional vinification that began with a short period of pre-fermentation maceration followed by fermentation that relied on indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasted 17 to 18 days. The wine was then aged for 18 months in barrels using a proportion of 2/3 new oak (medium toast) from Burgundy’s Chatillon and Bertranges forests.
  • Tasting notes Gorgeous dark colour.Gorgeous deep red in colour. Superb, warm, complex nose redolent of raspberry, blackberry, ripe plum and medlar. Magnificent start to the palate, which is simultaneously deep, velvety and fresh. Flavours of jam, kirsch and mild spices are underscored by a touch of vanilla and liquorice. A rare combination of fullness, complexity and freshness in the mouth, signs that the grapes were harvested at their peak of ripeness. The tannins are perfectly well integrated and the length is remarkable. An exceptional wine.
