Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saint-Georges rouge 2018

Nuits-Saint-Georges "Les Saint-Georges" 1er crus - 2018

  • PhilosophyOne of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.
  • TerroirThe wine of kings. Rare and reputed as the finest terroir in Nuits-SaintGeorges, “Les Saint-Georges” is one of Burgundy’s legendary climats and it is currently being considered for Grand Cru status. Located south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the bottom of the slope, the plot’s clayey brown soil strewn with pebbles lends depth and maturity to the wines along with ever-present minerality.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked at their peak of ripeness and brought quickly to the winery in small crates where they were meticulously sorted before being destemmed. Once they were transferred to tanks, they began to ferment naturally under the influence of indigenous yeasts after a few days. Maceration lasted 3 to 4 weeks with alternating punch-downs and pumpovers. After pressing, the young wine was barrel aged for 20 months (25% new oak) before being bottled.
  • Tasting notesGorgeous dark, purplish red in colour. The first nose features expressive, intense aromas underpinned by airy freshness and notes of brambles and wild rose followed by scents of spices (thyme, clove…), cedar, tobacco, and liquorice infused with violet. Then come hints of mint and pine that open up to aromas of red and black fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant jellies, raspberry liqueur). The nose finishes with warm notes of baked goods and lightly caramelized clafoutis. Lovely round, mouth-filling start to the palate testifies to outstanding maturity, revealing powerful yet fine, elegant tannins. Pleasing acidity is evocative of the stony, mineral profile that is typical of this magnificent terroir. This is an intense, expressive wine that is ideal for laying down.
