Corton Grand Cru Red 2019

Corton Grand Crus - 2019

  • PhilosophyCorton Grand Cru, by far the largest in all of Burgundy (160 ha) and the only red Grand Cru from the Côte de Beaune, stretches from mid-slope in Ladoix-Serrigny to the east to the edge of Pernand-Vergelesses to the west. It is made up of a multitude of climats that, due to their distinct terroirs, produce wines that each boast their singular character. Though the styles of Corton wines vary, they all have a definite boldness in common.
  • TerroirThe grapes for our cuvée come from the "En Charlemagne" (17 ha) climat, located on the border between Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, where the vines benefit from west-southwestern exposure. The vines are planted in clay-rich marly soil that lends the wine fine yet powerful aromas and flavours.
  • Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked and underwent a first sorting in the vineyard. Part of the cuvée (10%) was crafted from entire bunches of grapes and the juices were vinified without the use of sulphites. Following a short period of maceration at low temperatures, cuvaison lasted 23 days. The wine was barrel-aged (50% new oak) for 15 months.
  • Tasting notesGorgeous, deep cherry red in colour. The nose is elegant and intense, featuring fruity notes (dark fruit, cherry, clafoutis) that meld harmoniously with woody aromas (fine wood, vanilla and cocoa), evolving towards scents of bark and dark chocolate. The complex, velvety start to the palate is followed by an impression of solid freshness owed to the wine’s acidity and tannins, which are very elegant and precisely what is expected from the best this appellation has to offer. This is a complex, elegant, intense wine that finishes on a hint of minerality and pleasingly refreshing balsamic aromas (pine sap).
