Vosne Romanée Le Village Red 2018

Vosne-Romanée Communale - 2018

  • PhilosophyThe legend. If there is a mythical village in Burgundy, it is undoubtedly Vosne-Romanée, wreathed in its crown of incomparable Grand Crus (Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant…), and its legendary Premier Crus (Cros Parantoux, Gaudichots, Malconsorts…). The Delaunay family has historic ties with Vosne-Romanée that date back to the time when it distributed Grand Cru wines from the village’s great estates.
  • TerroirThe village of Vosne-Romanée houses Burgundy’s most rare and mythical Grand Crus: La Romanée, La Tâche, Echezeaux... as it provides an exceptional terroir for the Pinot Noir grape. The grapes for this cuvée were sourced from vines over 50 years old that grow in deep, calcareous clay soil that lends richness and concentration to the grapes, a characteristic that is typical of the appellation.
  • Vinification and ageingHandpicking allowed for the grapes to be sorted a first time in the vineyard. They were sorted a second time when they arrived at the Château’s winery. The entire harvest was destemmed before undergoing vinification that lasted 20 days, punctuated by 2 punch-downs. The wine was aged in two phases. The first phase lasted 6 months and used a proportion of 1/3 new oak barrels. After a first racking, the wine was then transferred to semi-new barrels, previously used for ageing red Bourgognes for 3 to 6 months, for a further 6 months of ageing.
  • Tasting notesGorgeous deep red in colour. The nose is very expressive and complex, pure and fresh, redolent of fruity aromas (wild strawberry, arbutus, Cornelian cherry) and floral notes (rose, violet). Superb start to the palate that is delicate, balanced and round with woody and spicy notes (rosewood, liquorice…). This wine shows nuances of bold tannins, though it is very elegant on the finish, ending on a peaty note for further complexity. Marvellous balance between finesse and structure.
