- PhilosophyOne of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Maison Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.
- TerroirThis Premier Cru is located to the south of the town of Nuits-Saint- Georges, near former hard limestone quarries. The soil is shallow, very well drained and rich in calcareous debris. Nearby limestone cliffs serve as protection for the plot and promote ripening. The grapes reach their peak of maturity rather early and are extremely concentrated.
- Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked and carefully sorted a first time in the vineyard and a second time at the winery. Vinification took place in new oak vats, with 20% of the harvest vinified as whole bunches. Cuvaison lasted 19 days, punctuated by two daily punch-downs during the most intense stage of the fermentation process. The wine was then transferred into barrels (50% new oak from the Allier forests of central France), where it was allowed to slowly age for 21 months.
- Tasting notesGorgeous deep red in colour, dense and intense in aspect. The first nose features delectable, generous aromas of red fruit coulis (raspberry, cherry, strawberry). These are complemented by pleasing floral (peony, rose) and woody (rosewood) notes which are rounded out by elegant camphor-like scents (cedar, pine resin) along with a hint of beeswax. A rich, full-bodied start to the palate boasts remarkable concentration. The finish offers a great deal of character with notes of chocolate and cherry. This powerful wine is endowed with nice acidity and is ideal for laying down. It will reveal all of its character after some time in the cellar.
