HOSPICES DE BEAUNE - Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée "Rousseau Deslandes" Rouge 2019

Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée "Rousseau Deslandes" 1er crus - 2019

  • PhilosophyWorld famous, the Hospices de Beaune are one of the great Burgundian institutions. Founded in 1443 to come to the aid of the most needy, the historic hospital is located in the heart of the old town in one of the most beautiful collections of European medieval architecture. Over the centuries, the institution has received donations and bequests from local families, mainly in the form of vineyards which today constitute, with almost 60 hectares, one of the most beautiful wine estates in the region. Vinified on site under the leadership of charismatic oenologist Ludivine Griveau, these great prestige wines are sold each year "en primeur" in November following the harvest, at a spectacular auction. Every year, and this since at least 1916, the Edouard Delaunay house buys some of the finest vintages which it matures and then bottles with the greatest care for its best customers.
  • TerroirAntoine Rousseau and Barbe Deslandes founded the Sainte-Trinité Hospital in 1645, later renamed the Hospice de la Charité, associated with the Hospices de Beaune during the Revolution. This cuvée is a tribute to this couple of great benefactors without whom the Hospices would not be what they are. It comes from three plots of premier crus: Les Cent Vignes (1.06ha), mainly planted between 1944 and 1958, constitutes the heart of this cuvée. Overlooking Pommard and representing a third of the blend, the plot of Montrevenots (0.71ha) is made up only of old vines prior to 1966. Les Mignottes (0.42ha) completes the cuvée.
  • Vinfication and ageingThis wine was vinified by the charismatic oenologist of the Hospices de Beaune, Ludivine Griveau. Very early manual harvest this year (early September) then rigorous sorting of the grapes on a sorting table. Destemmed grapes and maceration for 17 to 19 days with punching down and pumping over. Aging for 18 months in new barrels then entrusted to the house of Edouard Delaunay.
  • Tasting notesVery nice dark red color. A very beautiful, powerful and complex nose combining fruity (wild strawberry, fruit coulis, raspberry, cherry) and spicier notes from aging in barrels (beeswax, peat, charcoal, cedar, chocolate). Very nice ample mouth, ripe, marked by a certain sweetness, with again aromas of chocolate, bitter orange, Sichuan pepper, mint. A superb texture in the mouth, very balanced, with a nice acidity. A great complex and balanced wine that can be enjoyed young but has great aging potential.
