- PhilosophyThe five Montrachet Grand Crus are undoubtedly the world’s best showcase for the Chardonnay grape. These are the grandest of white wines, boasting perfect harmony between terroir and grape variety. Being able to age and offer one of these legendary wines is a unique stroke of luck and an honour for the House of Edouard Delaunay that we would not even have believed to be possible just a few years ago.
- TerroirLocated just above Montrachet, dominating the hill, the Chevalier-Montrachet plot features shallower calcareous soils that contain marls and stones with predominant hard limestone. The plot our cuvée hails from is terraced and benefits from full eastern exposure. The vines are 40 years old and boast considerable genetic diversity that results from massal selections. These grapes yield a wine that boasts delicacy, depth and minerality.
- Vinification and ageingThe grapes were handpicked and underwent a first sorting in the vineyard. After gentle pressing, the finest juices were selected and vinified at low temperatures in barrels, without the use of sulphites. Ageing lasted 18 months. 3-year-old barrels were used during the first 6 months so as not to mar the purity of this Grand Cru. After that, the wine was transferred to more recent barrels in order to polish up its structure and complexity. This second phase of ageing lasted 12 months.
- Tasting notesGorgeous pale colour. The first nose is discrete and evocative of nuances of wheat flour and honey, a touch of almond, confectioner’s sugar, and a slightly mineral note of gunflint. Starts off full-bodied, fresh, delicate and subtle on the palate, boasting lovely balance. We return to the nose to discover that notes of nougat, vanilla, praline, gingerbread and a hint of rum have surfaced. Fresh, spicy nuances are then revealed: lemon verbena, ginger, pepper, exotic fruits and flowers followed by scents of citrus, passion fruit and more mentholated notes of fresh herbs. A marvellous balance between delicateness, subtlety, length, and power. This is a grand wine destined for connoisseurs that will acquire incredibly complex aromas and flavours over the years.
